Richard Arfsten Farm Painting |
I cannot over-emphasize the importance of surface preparation. As far as I know, I am the only barn painter in Southeast Wisconsin who sandblasts to clean off the old paint. It requires a huge investment in machinery and the sand is very expensive. If I am doing the painting, I will sandblast at my cost. If you want me to sandblast and you do your own painting, triple this cost.
The picture in the middle of this page shows me working on a section that still needs sandblasting. I originally painted this barn 30 years ago and you can see it's now time to repaint. If I had waterblasted instead of sandblasting, and then sprayed two coats of paint, it would have looked like this in about 7 years. Sandblasting is the key to a paint job's longevity.
